|
The morning session embarked on with the welcome speech by the Head Boy, George Vijay Koshy. Vice Head Boy Arun presented the bouquet to Prof. Christopher. The Principal , Mr. T Premkumar did the honours and the school choir sang the Bhavans Anthem and the Kuwait National Anthem. Professor Christopher Abraham refined the concept of 21st century careers and aspirant prospects and captivated the young audience with his refulgent disquisition. “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read or write but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn.” By the time one graduates many jobs become outdated as newer courses break the surface. The top ten in-demand jobs in 2010 did not exist in 2004 and the top ten in-demand jobs in 2018 do not exist today. The professor urged the youngsters to move on choosing from up-to-the-minute career options like Organic culture, Terrorism studies ,E-business and anticipate career openings akin to being a computer aided surgeon, Nano Biologist, Climate Strategist and space vacation consultant. The video clippings embodied the presumed skills of a post modern job applicant and magnified the blatant need to sharpen these pivotal skills to be ‘the fittest to survive’ in the post modern competitive era. Relevant young queries and unsurpassed elucidation imbued the winding up of an exhilarating and enlightening session. The Head Girl, Namini Jessica Reddy proposed the vote of thanks and the school choir sang the Indian National Anthem. The analogy of a great teacher and the aphorism ‘ Good is the enemy of great ‘ dawned Prof. Christopher Abraham’s interactive session with the IES teaching fraternity in the afternoon. The educationist’s resplendent talk on ‘The meaning of 21st century learning and the role of teachers’ emphasized the inevitability of change, the need to provide avenues to develop smart skills and the call for emotional engagement than transactional relation. Prof. Christopher called the attention of the kindergarten teachers to prepare themselves for a class of 2020-2021. The chief forces reshaping the world are changing demographics and the technological details- two paradigms for globalization. The cognitive age paradigm emphasizes psychology, culture and pedagogy. Globalization has led to the intensifying economic, social and cultural changes across the planet coercing young people world over to develop innovative thinking skills, cultural awareness and higher order cognitive skills. The distressing fact is that the young people are awfully underprepared for the demands of the planet. Learning how to learn is the key for a successful student of this generation. Teachers should bridge the gap between how students learn and live in the modern world. Prof Christopher emphasized the need for the use of the right brain more than the left brain and urged the teachers to go beyond the realm of textbooks to mould an intellectually and emotionally aligned generation. Mr. Suresh V (Department of English) proposed the vote of thanks. The IES auditorium sensed a ‘paradigm shift’ at the end of the day, thanks to Prof. Christopher Abraham. Vice Principals Mrs. Shaila Naik and Mrs. Lalitha presented a memento to Prof. Christopher and the Principal Premkumar summed up the day’s program and appreciated the initiative of Prof. Christopher to share his thoughts with the teachers and students of the Indian Schools in Kuwait.
