A Manager's Toolset For Decision - Making

Tien Phan Van
“S P Jain offers a unique
program in which Participants
get an opportunity to study Semester I in one city and Semester II in the other.
Program is a blend of courses, cases and real life projects.’’

Tien Phan Van
April 2010

To fulfil the requirements of the Global MBA degree, participants complete 41 credits in one year, with more than 800 hours dedicated to classroom interaction. The program is divided into two semesters and consists of 20 credits of essential business courses and 14 credits in an area of specialization. In addition, participants complete one (1) three-credit research project in Semester I, and one (1) four-credit research project in Semester II. These are taken either in the area of specialization, or in cross-functional areas. Participants spend five days per week, 4 hours per day in class. They dedicate at least 4.5 additional hours a week to Passport to Excellence small-group workshops of about 1.5 hours each.

Passport to Excellence also has a Semester I research project.

The first semester gives future managers a broad toolkit of managerial frameworks, while the second semester encourages implementation of these tools in real-world application with a decision-making orientation. The emphasis on textbook learning is balanced with a more engaged (performance-enhanced) learning environment. The residential nature of the program enables participants to pursue self-directed learning and to reflect upon the content of lectures and associated readings.

Participants are not permitted to engage in work outside the program.

S P Jain emphasizes leadership by carefully considering the elements of decision-making, and then re-enforcing this knowledge with exercises, analysis, and case-studies that facilitate practical application. All of this is supplemented by quality instruction from faculty and visiting experts. A leader has many duties, but above all, must consistently make high-quality decisions, often under pressure. Recognizing this, S P Jain, implemented a substantial revision of its pedagogy and curriculum, implementing changes designed to hone participants’ decision-making skills. Decision-Making is a complex exercise that requires recognizing key factors, gathering information, and analyzing situations and options (including risks and opportunities). This requires more than a thorough knowledge of management tools and techniques. Decision-Making is cross-functional and cross-disciplinary, and must take into account the learning styles, skill sets, and potential contribution of team members, as well as psychological, cultural, and behavioral issues.

Key highlights of the new curriculum are:

  • A focus on decision-making.
  • Reducing the number of core courses and adding a supplemental focus on communication, leadership, and personality development.
  • Making the classroom akin to a discussion laboratory for discovery-based learning.
  • Including applications-based assignments.
  • A portfolio program that enables participants to showcase their competencies to prospective employers.
  • An emphasis on professionalism and ethics (behavioral) through the course of the program

The program is divided into two semesters.

Semester I – Decision Making: Toolset

In Semester1, a participant shall be required to complete 20 credits, all from general business courses; in addition, a participant is required to complete a Research Project equivalent to 3 credits.

Semester II – Decision Making: Application

In Semester2, a participant shall complete 14 credits - all the credits from the chosen area of specialization.

In addition, a participant will be required to complete a Research Project aligned to the chosen specialist field or some combination thereof. This project is equivalent to 4 credits.
