S P Jain hosted participants from IE Business School, who visited India, to gain first-hand view of the country's commercial, entertainment and financial opportunities. The program comprised academic sessions led by faculty members from S P Jain School of Global Management and IE Business School. The program was a true blend of in-depth lectures on India-specific business topics taught by prominent experts, company visits and cultural events.
The program commenced with a primary objective in every participant's mind - to understand India's main industrial and service sectors in the larger context of trade and commerce throughout a growing Asia; and gaining insight via interactive sessions with prominent experts on potential investments in India's top business sectors. The program began with the participants getting acquainted with the Mumbai city and understanding its significance as the commercial capital of India. Later they were hosted by Mr Nitish Jain, President S P Jain School of Global Management, for the welcome dinner at his residence, where he highlighted the importance of critical analysis and strategic planning for any international organization before investing in a growing economy like India. From the next day onwards, the program began in its full motion. Prof Sundaram Rajagopalan, Dean Executive Education at S P Jain and Elena Escagedo, Open Enrollment Programs Director at IE Business School, welcomed the participants and appreciated their zeal for attending this informative cum interactive program. From thereon, several sessions were conducted accompanied by company visits and cultural evenings enabling the participants to gain unique networking opportunities and to gain a deep insight in the social and business culture of India.
- Emerging India: Indian Growth story in 21st Century
The session was conducted by Prof Sundaram Rajagopalan, Dean Executive Education at S P Jain, where he highlighted the characteristics of India's broad-based growth model and its unique path to development, as well as a comparison of its model with China and other emerging nations.
- Understanding the Indian Economy: Challenges & Opportunities for Investment
The session was conducted by Dr Harkant Mankad, Professor of Business Strategy, Macroeconomics; Microeconomics, S P Jain School of Global Management. This session analyzed the recent performance of the key sectors of Indian economy, the need to make it inclusive and the emerging challenges in maintaining its growth momentum. Other highlights of session included: Regulatory aspects in India and a look at trends and drivers of Indian economy of interest to Multinational companies.
- Impact of Culture on Indian Business
The session was conducted by Prof Piya Mukerjee, Professor of Corporate Ethics, Human Values and Life Skills, S P Jain School of Global Management providing an in-depth understanding of the fast-evolving business culture in India within the larger context of Indian society, its cultural landscape, and its effect on today's business environment.
- Marketing to the Diverse Indian Consumers
The session was conducted by Prof Mangesh Brose, Associate Dean Marketing, Welingkar Institute of Management. In his presentation he emphasized on the importance of the flourishing economy and the young population with rising incomes in India's representation today as one of the biggest consumer markets in the world. He further evaluated the successful application of MADE FOR INDIA marketing strategies by leading multinational companies, during his presentation.
- Overview of the Indian Financial Sector
This session was conducted by Mr Tushar Vikram, Managing Director, Head of Financial Institution Group and Micro Finance-India and Nepal. During this session he presented an overview of Indian Financial sector, the emerging scenario of Capital and Venture Capital Market, as well as, the diverse opportunities offered to foreign investors by the Indian Financial Sector.
- The Indian Manufacturing Sector: Opportunities, Challenges and Myths
This session was conducted by Dr Boman Moradian, Member of the Board of Garware Polyester Ltd., Zee Telefilms and Essel Propack Ltd. He discussed on the benefits and risks to potential Industrial and Manufacturing Investors and the advantages offered by India's legal framework, demographic lead, technical and managerial talent and reduced geopolitical risk, in contrast with India's emerging economy rivals in Asia.
- Overview of IT - IT Enabled Services Sector
The session was conducted by Mr Sagar Narsian, Vice President Reliance Infocom. During this session he covered the growth of the IT / ITES industry and its relationship with Indian economy, highlighting the challenges still ahead for this industry.
- Indian Entertainment and Media Industry
This session was conducted by Mr. Aditya Bhatt, Director of Believe Media, Visiting Faculty S P Jain School of Global Management where he addressed the tremendous potential offered by the Entertainment and Media (E&M) Industry in India. He emphasized on consumer behaviour patterns with respect to various media platforms and also discussed on how advertising strategies are devised in India based on the regional- cultural aspects and not based on the country as a whole.
- Outsourcing to India: Governance and Network Issues in India
This session was conducted by Professor Kiron Ravindran, Professor of Information Technology Management, IE Business School. He highlighted the growing strategic importance of outsourcing in today's global markets, and India´s role as a major player in the industry. Furthermore, he emphasized on the inherent threats and gains afforded by outsourcing to India, as well as, novel approaches to vendor selection and asset transfer practices in the industry.
- Service Excellence in India: Challenges and Opportunities
This Session was conducted by Mr. Kumar Rajagopalan, CEO Retail Association of India, where he highlighted the key aspects of the Retail industry and emphasized on a number of challenges faced by the international players in the Indian retail market.
- Presentation on Experience of MNC operations in India
It was an impressive presentation by the CEO of Nokia India, Mr ShivKumar where he enlightened the audience on the history of MNCs in India and the current challenges being faced by MNCs to establish themselves in the Indian markets.
Company Visits
Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T)
Location: Larsen & Toubro, Powai
The main purpose of this visit was to understand L&T's role in the development of Indian infrastructure. Mr Yogi Sriram, Executive Director Larson & Toubro, Engineering & Construction Projects L&T, presented on how L&T has been contributing to the development of the Indian infrastructure and what are the challenges and opportunities lying ahead of them in this venture. This presentation was then followed by the site visit where the participants had the opportunity to learn the manufacturing facilities at the L&T premise.
S J Film Studio
Location: Andheri
Participants were accompanied to one of the best TV studios in Mumbai by Mr Aditya Bhatt who earlier conducted the session on Indian Entertainment & Media Industry. The participants had the opportunity to witness live shooting of a reality game show sponsored by Panasonic India. The objective of this visit was to enable the participants get the real feel of events taking place on the sets during film/television shooting.
Commodity Exchange MCX Chakala Andheri
Participants had the opportunity to visit the MCX, India's largest commodity exchange and the sixth largest in the world in terms of the number of contracts traded in the year 2009. They were assisted by Mr Ketul Contractor, VP Future Trading, during their visit and they also had the opportunity to get a glimpse of the live trading operations of the commodities.
Cultural Visits
Chokhi Dhani Village
Participants visited Chokhi Dhani Village to taste the true essence of the Rajasthani culture. During this visit, they had the opportunity to experience the folk dance, folk music and the traditional food of Rajasthan. It was truly a memorable experience for all the participants.
Throw of Dice at NCPA
At this event, the participants had the opportunity to witness the 'Throw of Dice', a choreographic composition based on the epic 'Mahabharata' performed in one of the traditional Indian dancing styles - the Manipuri classical dance style.
The participants from IE Business School showed tremendous amount of zeal and were very proactive to gain as much information as they could on the Indian markets and culture. They actively asked questions during the sessions and merrily participated in the cultural activities in and outside the program.
We thank the IE business school and all its participants for their valuable contribution in making this program a grand success.

The program ended on a towering note with an impressive presentation from Mr Shivkumar, CEO Nokia India, and a gala farewell dinner. The IE faculty and participants openly acknowledged the high quality of content and faculty expertise assembled for class room sessions. They appreciated the company visits and interaction with top officials of the respective companies. They were truly delighted with cultural evenings included in the program. IE officials accompanying the participants were confident of making this event a regular program in their group of open programs.
